The Incorporated Village of Freeport water system provides water to a population of approximately 40,000 residents through approximately 10,000 services in an area of about 4.93 square miles within the Village boundaries.
The Water Department draws its water supply from 8 operating wells that have been drilled into Magothy Aquifer at depths ranging from 500 ft. to 640 ft. This aquifer, which was originally created by a glaciers action, is held in place by sand and pressure of the ocean water that surrounds Long Island. Quantities of water presently available exceed the existing and projected demands of our customers and the water quality is related excellent.
The water, after chemical treatment, is pumped into two elevated storage tanks. Water flows by gravity from each storage tank into the 125 miles of the distribution (piping) system.
